Here's a real hapatong - life size, carved from the length of a tree trunk.
I chose it for my submission to the 2021 Bouquets to Art exhibition at San Francisco's de Young Museum
This funerary statue personifies a particular ancestral spirit or deity that brought good fortune, dispelled evil spirits - possibly used in malagan ceremony.
My offering bouquet appears in foreground. Materials used include:
Proton, Kalanchoe, Star of Bethleham, Equisitum, Curly Willow, Love-in-a-Mist, Anthurium.
